Summer in Zermatt is never just "a" summer. The Zermatt summer means exercise, nature adventures and relaxed hosts who will create out of every moment an personalised experience.
For all those who are really looking forward to Zermatt and our mountains, we have created our Summer Guide 2020: Tips on how to be active, how to relax and all to enjoy!
The little insider tips come from Alex, Heidi, Julia, Severa, Nicole and Rosa, who belong to the SchlossHotel team just like the Matterhorn belongs to Zermatt. They have gone into themselves and shared their secret places and their most beautiful Zermatt moments.
By the way, our team is also looking forward to supporting you before and during your stay and to taking over the planning of your activities, day trips and restaurant reservations.
But here they come now, the top 10 + one :-)
My quick training for in between keeps me fit. From Zermatt, it goes up to the Sunnegga with an outstanding view to the Matterhorn. This trail is also suitable as a Matterhorn training trail. Those who master the route within a certain time have passed the fitness test and have good chances for a successful ascend of the Matterhorn. My best time is 45 minutes. Let us see who can top me!
My advice: don't go so fast, rather save your energy for the final spurt.
When I need a break, I do this extensive training with 1300 meters altitude. I have this beautiful trail mostly for myself, can switch off and enjoy the wonderful panorama. I start at Zermatt station, go via Schweifinen to the Wisshorn and back via Trift. After such a challenge I sleep very well.
Probably not really an insider tip ;-). But to be above the clouds, to see the Swiss Alps very close and from above, is simply a unique experience, which I can only recommend to everyone. With the helicopter of Air Zermatt, one flies from the heliport Zermatt very close to the Matterhorn and definitely comes back with a change of perspective.
Now and then, rapid descents are just the right thing for me to clear my head. The north face of the Matterhorn at the back and with a free view to the Weisshorn, the Mischabel group and the upper Mattertal is repeatedely a highlight. But in general, to discover the Zermatter surroundings by bike, you cannot get enough of it!
Tip: in any case, a stopover in the Stafelalp should be planned.
The summer in Zermatt is short, but the more beautiful than somewhere else ;-) I am already looking forward to the days at the Schalilago in Täsch or at the Grünsee. Lying at the lake, enjoying the sun and a refreshing bath in the glacier water, this is for me like a short holiday in between.
From Zermatt, the Edelweiss seems to be unreachable. But if one knows which way to go (and we know it), after approximately one hour of ascend, it is possible to enjoy the well-deserved turnip cake with a wonderful view over the village. If you still have the energy, you can head towards Trift (about two hours from Edelweiss), where you can get the best apple pie ;-) The path is wonderful and reminds a bit of Heidiland.
There is nothing more beautiful for me than seeing the lush green of the lost valley after climbing over dull moraines. Peacefully a glacier stream meanders through the valley and there is absolute silence. As the hiking trail is not advertised, other hikers rarely get lost here. If you are looking for loneliness, you will find it here.
The Gornergrat and Riffelsee are not without reason very popular. In order to be able to enjoy this wonderful place completely for me, I take the Gornergratbahn very early in the morning. Looking from the observation deck to the unbelievable 29 four-thousanders... this is simply indescribable. From the station Rotenboden I walk to the Riffelsee. No hustle and bustle, the fresh air of dawn in my nose - that's relaxation for me.
Even Zermatt has sometimes its rainy days. On these days I love to retire with a book in L'Atelier Grandsire and enjoy the sweet delicacies. By the way, one can also have a wonderful meal there and for the late hours there is a big choice of wines.
My tip: try the homemade chocolate croissants.
Do you know it too: It's wonderful weather, but you still don't feel like doing great things and climbing many meters of altitude. My plan A for such days is a leisurely round of the Pensioners' trail. It goes comfortably through the larch forest and then I make a small detour to the Restaurant Sonnmatten with its wonderful sun terrace and playground for the children.
My tip: Definitely try the Schnitzel!
After a long walk back in the village I love to visit the Gelateria "Gelato Italiano" at the church square. Here you can get heavenly good original Italian ice cream. Those who want to end the day completely Italian are absolutely right in the restaurant "Vieux Valais da Nico".
